Bat and Trap is an English bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of up to eight players. At any one time, one team is batting and the other is bowling. The game uses a ball similar to a Lacrosse ball. It is placed on one end of a see-saw type lever on a wooden box. The box, which is 22 inches long, 5 inches wide, and 5 inches high, is called a trap.
Each player on the batting team takes a turn by hitting the opposite end of the lever with their bat, which sends the ball up into the air. They then try to hit the ball between two 7-foot-high posts. The posts are 13 ½ feet apart and 21 yards away. The batter is automatically out if the ball is not hit between the posts at a height above 7 feet or if any of the bowling team catches the ball before it hits the ground.
After a successful hit, one player throws or bowls the ball back towards the trap. The trap has a 5-inch wicket on the front of it which is hinged at the bottom. If the ball knocks the wicket flat, the batter is out. If not, the batting team scores and the batter remains in the game to bat again when it is their turn. When all members of the batting team are out, the batting and bowling teams change places. The game continues until all players on both sides have batted.
