Spotlight Sports – Laser Tag

If you are into simulated combat games, then Laser Tag is right up your alley. It’s easy and fun to play and it’s suitable for players of various ages and fitness levels. I’ve played several times and I will tell you that it gets the competitive juices flowing.

Laser tag is a recreational shooting game using infrared-emitting guns or phasers. It’s important to know that the guns emit harmless infrared beams. Depending upon the venue, the guns may also have features that can enhance the experience or provide information. Features include adjustable firing modes, reload options, ammo status, and player statistics. Players normally wear vests that have infrared-sensitive targets on them. Players aim and shoot at these targets as the other players move to escape getting hit or tagged. When a target is hit, the player either loses points or is temporarily disabled from shooting. Upon hitting a target, the shooter may receive points depending upon the specific game and venue.

It is usually played in specially designed arenas or outdoor settings involving two or more teams. The first arena was built in the early 1980’s in the United States. Some of these locations have very intricate designs with plenty of barriers and objects to hide behind. Many outdoor venues have great natural barriers such as trees, bushes, and ditches. Several venues use elaborate themes and extravagant lighting and sound systems to enhance the experience.

Laser tag games can have numerous objectives and scenarios. I have participated in games where the last person or team standing (not hit) wins. I’ve also played in games where the person or team who accumulates the most points wins. There’s also a two-team version in which you win by capturing the other team’s flag. Game scenarios and rules can vary widely depending on the venue and the game’s design.

Laser Tag is gaining in popularity because it appeals to a very diverse base of people. There is     little to no contact and is basically a very safe sport to play. Unlike other simulated combat sports like paintball, there are no physical projectiles to deal with. It allows players to engage in exciting combat scenarios without the risk of serious injury. The ease of play and the lack of physical contact make it accessible to just about anyone.

Laser Tag encourages social interaction, team cooperation, and friendly competition. It is an excellent way to bond with friends and family while providing an outlet for stress relief and teamwork. It’s not uncommon for businesses and school groups to use Laser Tag to promote bonding and team building. The competition encourages collaboration, strategizing, and communication as players strive to achieve a common goal. Healthy competition is good for the soul, especially when it’s happening in a very non-threatening environment.

For those who want to take it to the next level, there are new leagues and tournaments forming every year. This makes for a more competitive experience with added elements of strategy and higher skill levels. There are Laser Tag locations in nearly 40 states in America. Laser Tag is now played in over 50 different countries and globally recognized as a sport.

Overall, the blend of technology, inclusivity, and the social and physical aspects of laser tag has contributed to its increasing popularity throughout the world. It’s an engaging and entertaining activity that caters to a wide range of interests and preferences. If you’ve never tried it, get out there and give it a go.
